PRIESTHOOD
|
PRIESTHOOD first entered the music scene back in 1999 when the group signed their first record deal with Metro 1 Records. The group as a trio would release three albums with Metro: Sprinkle Me Luv, Keepin It Real and Turn Up Your Radio. The first album was nominated for a Dove Award for Best Dance Song ("Be Around") and the second was nominated for Best Hip Hop Album.
By 2002 the group took a long hard look at their direction and their sound. Priesthood has a reputation for their laid back grooves and their tight vocal harmonies, an interesting combination coming from a west coast rap group. J-Rizzo, their leader, together with Mr. Swift's production work lays the foundation for their unique sound. After a founding member left the group a local solo artist by the name of Chico Breeze joined Priesthood to add a much-needed creative edge. Tapasu, another established solo artist, joined the lineup followed by Kartoon who was one half of the group "Brownzville". With the roster now complete they together embarked in a mission to develop their new sound beginning with their first album together Thug Worship.
One of the group's most noticeable traits is their spiritual influence in their lyrics. And because they all have come from a life influenced by the "hood" they share about those experiences: the highs, the lows, the good, the bad, the traps and the pitfalls of choices people make living in such conditions. But instead of glorifying this lifestyle they choose to use their music to reach, teach, and heal people who battle the everyday pressures of just trying to survive in the hood.
